COMPETING against the best culinary teams in Asia did not faze students from Taylor’s School of Hospitality and Tourism (TCHT) at all.
In fact, they bagged medals in the The Food and Hotel Asia (FHA) 2008 Culinary Challenge held recently in Singapore.
Chef lecturer Patrick Siau did the team proud when he received the silver medal in the Pastry Showpiece category for his 0.9m-high sugar masterpiece known as the “Celestial Dragon”.
“It took me about 10 hours to come up with this and I was happy with the outcome.
“It’s great to be recognised as one of the best pastry artists in the region,” said Siau.
Final-year Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management students Soon Pao Voon, Lim Wee Wee and Chong Yi Shawn won the bronze medal in the Dream Team Challenge.
Pao Voon, Wee Wee and Yi Shawn had to pit their skills against 15 other teams from top hospitality establishments in Asia, including the luxurious Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai.
But the students kept their cool in their first-ever international competition.
“We weren’t as experienced as the other teams, nor did we have as many topnotch products and equipment.
“However, we were creative in our setup and menu, provided exceptional service to our guests and motivated each other throughout the challenge,” said Wee Wee.
The FHA Culinary Challenge is held every two years and is recognised as the top culinary and F&B competition in Asia.
